Brave Space Building™️ Framework, Step 6: Shared Language

Picture yourself in a space that is structured with the intention of allowing the people within it to be their most authentic selves. A space where individuals feel connected not only to one another but also to themselves and the work ahead. Such a space doesn’t happen by coincidence, it takes diligent work and the ongoing commitment of all involved. However, such a space is required for there to be a foundation for transformational work to occur.

CommunityBuild Ventures has created a six-step process for developing these environments. It’s called the Brave Space Building™️ Framework. The steps are as follows:

  1. 1. Sharing Gratitude
  2. 2. Recognizing and Identifying Feelings
  3. 3. Setting and Living Intentions
  4. 4. Acknowledging Assumptions
  5. 5. Establishing Community Agreements
  6. 6. Creating a Shared Language

For information about steps 1-5, please refer to previous articles which dive deeper into what the individual processes entail. In this article, we’re going to focus on Step 6: Shared Language.

Creating a Shared Language for Brave Space Building™️

Language is a component of society that can be used to build up or tear down. It can bring together a people or divide a nation. It can be used to heal or wield as a weapon. Language is powerful.

For those very reasons, we put a strong focus on being intentional about the language individuals should use within what we refer to as a “Brave Space.” We help participants develop a shared language through which they can develop a deeper understanding amongst themselves and communicate more effectively. This applies to anywhere that language is used, be it spoken or in text.

The key to creating language that bridges gaps and fosters community is to first be mindful of your language. Take note of any words that you may be using that are potential triggers to others. Even if your intent is far from harm, the effect of your words could be damaging to professional relationships which is why developing a shared language is an ongoing process that requires intention and time.

Effective Brave Space Building™️

In a perfect world, there would be no misunderstandings, no hurt, no underlying trauma keeping us divided. But we don’t live in that kind of world. Instead, we are flawed individuals who make mistakes, especially in the workplace. That’s why CommunityBuild Ventures wants to help organizations create a supportive “container” where participants can take off their masks and feel seen and supported.

We believe this is most powerful and effective when guided by a highly qualified and skilled facilitator who can help create a professional learning community within your organization.  The way that we accomplish this is with our Brave Space Building™️ Framework. While creating a shared language is a vital step in this process and crucial to ongoing effective communication, it’s only one step and all are required to create a foundation upon which both professional and personal transformation can happen. Let our team help your organization build a Brave Space.
